Scream 4 trailer

The target audience for this film would probably be 15-24 as all of the previous films were also 15's. The film doesn't need to have an 18 certificate as there is not too much gory violence or swearing, and there is not really anything that would cause a 15 year old to be too frightened. I think this film appeals to males and females, as although it is a horror, there are female leads that would be appealing to women.

The genre of this film is horror, which is made obvious by the killing that can be seen in the trailer. It is also apparent that it is a horror because there are a lot of frightened girls and a mysterious masked figure.

The pace of this trailer is quite slow to start off with, so that we get some insight into what is going on, and also get to hear phone calls between people, which gives us, the audience, a clue to how this killing all begins. As the phone call continues, the pace speeds up quite a lot with quick flashes of different characters and their facial expressions. This leads us to think that they may be people who died, as the man on the phone is saying 'everyone close to you is dead' or maybe they are characters that will be introduced to us later on in the trailer. Half way through we see a quick scream from two girls, which could suggest that they have seen the murderer or are in the process of being killed. Half way through the shot's slow down, so that we see conversations between characters and are able to hear what they are talking about, but soon after the shot's speed up to quick flashes again.

There is dialogue in this trailer from the very start, with a phone call over a black screen. The man on the other end of the phone says 'Welcome home Sydney' which gives us the idea that he is the murderer from the very start. The next dialogue that can be heard is this man on the end of the phone saying 'you're a survivor aren't you Sidney.' This leads us to question what she survived, and how she survived, This also arouses the horror suspicion as you would not randomly get a phone call from someone who knew your name etc. along with them saying you survived something. 'What good is it to be a survivor if everyone close to you is dead.' This gives us evidence that this film is going to be a horror as the phone call is about murder. There is a lot of dialogue in this trailer, as there are many conversations we need to hear, in order for the movie and trailer to make sense. Without the dialogue between characters, we would not be able to form relationships between them, causing us to feel no sympathy for them, and the movie would not make any sense as it would just be someone in a mask killing loads of high school students.

The music to start off with is quite deep with the occasional bang, with quite a sinister feel to it. The music is played quieter than the dialogue in the first shot so that we listen fully to the phone conversation, but also have the music to build up our fright and tension. This music continues so there is a mood that is set, in order to keep us glued to our seats. Following on from this there is quite a tinny music which starts off fairly quietly but gets progressively louder. After a scream from a big class of people at 0:39 the music becomes quick fast and more of a rock genre compared to tension building, which is used quite commonly in horror films as it creates a fast paced atmosphere for a killer to start murderering. The music throughout is tension building so that we stay glued to our screens watching this trailer, with the music getting louder everytime something interesting is going to happen. Towards the end. the music turns to what sounds like an orchestra, with the pace of the music increasing, which could suggest many people are about to die.

The shot types in this trailer start off with just a mid shot, so that we establish the character and what they look like, including their reactions to this phone call. Following this there are a few close up's of peoples faces, so that we get to see different characters, and what they are wearing, to try and figure out for ourselves who they are, and what their relevance is. One person is in a police uniform which makes us think that he is probably going to be the hero in this film. There is also a close up of a scared girl's face, although we do not see what she is looking at. The majority of shot's in this trailer are mid shots - close ups as the people who created this trailer want the audience to build a relationship with the characters. There are a few long shot's half way through so that we are able to see a class of many people, which makes us question whether they will all die.

There are a few intertitles in this trailer, which start almost half way through. The first intertitle we see is 'One movie, redifined fear.' This makes the audience anxious to what is going to be in this film, as if it redifined fear, it must be very scary. The next intertitle we see is 'from master of suspense Wes Craven.' 'Suspense' encourages us to continue watching this trailer as we want to find out about the suspense and how suspense is created. 'Comes a new generation of terror' is the next intertitle, which encourages us to watch this film to see how it is a new generation of terror. These intertitles make the film more appealing to watch as we are interested to see if the film lives up to expectations and how it does this.

There is no voiceover in this trailer, as the dialogue is enough to inform us of information, and a voiceover may take away some of the suspense.
